Audience Feedback of Our Opening

We showed our horror film opening to our actors and friends to get their reactions and feedback. We attempted to create a representative sample as our target audience is a majority male. 

We then interviewed them in groups of two or three to get their opinions on the film.

Survey Results and How They Effected Our Film 

In our initial survey we found out that are target audience was generally male, however this was only by 52% meaning there is also a key female audience to consider, we did this by featuring men and women equally in the piece. While we did at times conform to the traditional gender stereotypes for example the females in our opening are presented as more afraid.  

Our research implied that the primary audience of the horror genre was people under the age of 35 but we decided that we wanted to aim our film at a slightly younger audience as we are more likely to understand our own age group, to target this age group we used a lower range of ages ranging from 12-28 so we could understand which age exactly we should target.

80% of our target audience said that it was more terrifying when the viewer did not who the killer was until the last minute rather than knowing throughout the film. Our results also showed us that audience members empathise with characters of a similar age, class, appearance and dialect.

Genre

While the primary Genre of our film is obviously Horror as specified by our brief, we were also keen to incorporate the mystery and film noir genre. We both also have an interest in slightly older films from the fifties and sixties or earlier so we hoped to incorporate this era into our piece somehow. We managed this by setting a section of our scene in the 1940s, while this was primarily chosen because of our interest in the time, it could be argued that World War II was the most horrific, traumatic experience our country has ever experienced and should in itself be motif of the Horror Genre. Despite our subgenres focusing more on the historic or mysterious aspects we were also careful to include traditional conventions of the Horror genre, for example gore, when we revealed the bloody body of our victim or in our music, which built tension through its ominous theme and sudden stop; Our piece also ends with a dramatic scream, then a black screen with the audio suddenly cut off, as shown in several horror film openings for example Final Destination.

We were inspired by the film series, Final Destination as the structure of their horror films are similar to the what we hoped to achieve, the films have a similar target audience to ours, aiming the films at older teenagers and young adults. The films feature a group of teenagers facing mortal peril, this makes the horrific scenes more relatable to the target market group and inspired us to feature a group of teenagers in our film

Chronicles of Narnia

While not a horror film we were inspired by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as we were initially keen to have a section of our film set in the second world war, so we were inspired by film sequences showing the bombing of civilians in this time, as it adds to the horrific nature of the scenes.

Behind the Scenes -Days 4 and 5

On Day 4 and 5 we focused on the re-filming of the footage that we decided was inadequate the first stages of the editing process. We also added a couple of shots that would make the opening more fluent and tried some of our shots in different angles to give us the best possible raw footage in editing. 

                                 
                      

On Day 4 of filming we refilmed and completed filming the exterior footage. Due to unfortunate  weather conditions on the days we had previously filmed our outside section we were unable to complete the footage, thankfully we were suitably satisfied with the raw footage and could complete the exterior scene in our Horror film opening. 

Our weather conditions on Day 4 were actually ideal, there was a thin layer of myst, which not only added to the mood and atmosphere of the piece but also creates an editing bridge between that footage and the footage recorded at a different location. 

On Day 5 of our filming we managed to record all of the necessary refilming of our footage, we originally experimented with two new locations on the location of our school site, these locations were the school's steam tunnel and the school D of E cellar.
